Special Olympics teams to participate in exhibition basketball game

Hannibal’s local Special Olympics teams will show off their basketball skills at a special exhibition game Jan. 10.

Members of the five local teams will play during halftime of the Hannibal High School boys game against Palmyra at Korf Fieldhouse.

The HHS Key Club is helping to sponsor the 2012 Polar Plunge, which will be Jan. 28 at the Hannibal boat ramp.

There will be sign-up for the Polar Plunge available at the game, and Polar Plunge souvenirs will be thrown into the crowd.

The Polar Plunge is open for anyone 10 years and older who raises $50 for Special Olympics. There are warming tents available after the plunge. The event will feature a costume contest and food and drink available for sale. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the plunging begins at 11 a.m.

Members of the Special Olympics team will have a special viewing place during the event.

The teams practice basketball 4:30-6 p.m. every Wednesday at the Admiral Coontz Recreation Center.

Since Marion County Services for the Developmentally Disabled, the sponsoring agency of the local Special Olympics team, reintroduced the Special Olympics program less than a decade ago participation numbers have steadily grown.

The local Special Olympics team competes in three sports, basketball, track and bowling. At this time, only athletes 18 and older can participate.
