Polar Plunge a Splashing Success
The second annual Polar Plunge in Hannibal was a shivery success, raising $9,500 to date.
A record 86 brave men and women from around the area donned costumes and swimwear to take a chilly dip in the Mississippi River.
The proceeds went to Missouri Special Olympics.
Online fundraising is still going on. Donations may be made to www.somo.org/hannibalplunge.
Nicole Martin was the top individual fund-raiser and the Icealicious Ice Bombs was the top group. Hannah Bogue raised the most money of Hannibal High School students. The winner of the costume contest was Michael Koenig, who was dressed as a tourist.
The athletes from the Hannibal Hawks team, Hannibal’s Special Olympics team, judged the costume contest.
The event was hosted by Hannibal Parks & Recreation, Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop B, Shine a Light on Autism and Hannibal High School Key Club.
Hannibal’s is the only Polar Plunge in Missouri to take place in the Mississippi River. Tim Schuster, Special Olympics coordinator for the Northeast Missouri region, said the event was a great success and plans are being made for next year’s plunge.
