During Hannibal’s 200th birthday celebration, the Bicentennial Committee is inviting Hannibal citizens to become a part of history by seeking items for the Bicentennial time capsule.

The Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department is coordinating the creation of a new time capsule, to be opened 50 years from now, in 2069.

Hannibal residents are asked to contribute typed or handwritten letters. The letters can be to themselves, the residents of Hannibal or to a loved one.

Letters should be submitted in an unsealed envelope – all letters will be properly sealed before being put in the time capsule.

For companies, churches, teams and clubs, the Bicentennial committee is welcoming rosters or lists of employees/members along with a description and photo of the group.

Other items, including photos of the spring’s sandbagging selfies and submissions by Hannibal seventh-graders already have a place in the time capsule.

The time capsule will be donated by Smith Funeral Home and located inside City Hall.

All items must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.  The items can be sent to Hannibal Parks & Recreation, 2069 Time Capsule, 320 Broadway, Hannibal, Mo. 63401 or brought into City Hall. The time capsule will be closed in a ceremony at Central Park Oct. 26.
