The 20th annual Ice Bowl Disc Golf tournament Saturday lived up to its name with temperatures in the teens and several inches of snow on the ground.
Disc golfers from around the Tri-State area participated in the tournament at the Don Crane Disc Golf Course in Huckleberry Park, sponsored by the Hannibal Parks & Recreation and Excitement Disc Golf.
Proceeds of more than $800 was collected for the Buddy Pack program, the players also donated canned goods. Westview Nursing Home, Levering Regional Healthcare, Big River Oil and Rays Auction Service also donated funds.
The Ice Bowl mission is to increase local awareness of disc golf by raising funds for local and regional charities, with an emphasis on fighting food insecurity.
In Hannibal the Buddy Pack program sponsored by HAYS (Hannibal Alliance for Youth Success) benefits more than 400 Hannibal public and parochial schoolchildren each week. The program allows children to take home backpacks full of free food each Friday. The goal is to make sure low-income children stay fed, healthy and productive.
John Shaw of Excitement Disc Golf said disc golfers love giving back. “Anytime we can do something for charity for a local cause, we love to get involved.”
