The ninth annual Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department Cardboard Boat races at the Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatic Center featured unpredictable chaos in the water and it was fun for all participants and spectators.
Trophies were awarded to the following winners:
- Fastest Boat: Kellen Viehmann and Marshall Miller
- Titanic Award Ogden Nunemacher and Trystan Kendrick
- Best Decorated: Averie Juarez and Berkeley Barragan
- Crowd Pleaser: Colin Whitehead and Cole English
- Tom and Becky’s Choice: Ayden Juarez and Trevor Hill
The boat races are for passengers ages 6-16. They must build a functional craft with only cardboard and duct tape. Emily Hultgren, aquatics director at the Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatics Center, said creativity and teamwork are the top requirements for a successful sail. She said lifeguards helped the participants get into the boats and stay safe, while also serving as judges.
