For the first time ever, Hannibal Parks & Recreation and the YMCA of Hannibal are collaborating to form a summer swim team.
The Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatic Center and YMCA of Hannibal are collaborating to host a recreational league that will last eight weeks, June 2 – July 28.
Marie Allen, swim team coach for the Hannibal YMCA, said this is a new fun and laidback introduction to competitive swim. Participants will learn strokes and techniques during practices.
The swim team will practice 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatic Center. There will also be several swim meets but those will typically be in the evening at the Hannibal YMCA or other locations.
Tryouts and evaluations will be 6:30 p.m. May 12, 15, and 20 at the Hannibal YMCA with Allen. She asks that each participant bring a swimsuit, goggles and a towel. It is a one-time fee of $150 to join the team.
Emily Hultgren, aquatics director for Hannibal Parks & Recreation, said, she hopes the swim team builds confidence and makes youngsters safer at the pool. She said, “Swimming is a lifelong skill that can be enjoyed throughout your life. From recreation to competition, the ability to swim opens up opportunities for many activities.”
