The Tree of the Month for June is a bald cypress at 3890 Highway MM, at the home of Sally Bouyea.
This stately conifer turns rich brown in the fall, loses its needles in the winter and grows a new set in the spring. The tree was medium-sized when the Bouyeas moved to the house more than 60 years ago.
The Tree Board established a Tree of the Month Award to celebrate Hannibal’s beautiful urban forest and its stewards. The Tree Board’s mission is to encourage and inspire by example proper planting and tree care in Hannibal. This year, the city of Hannibal is celebrating the designation of Tree City USA for 25 years in recognition of its commitment to urban and community forestry programs.
According to Tree Board guidelines, the tree must be: residential and visible from the street; distinctive with good form; and well-cared for, properly pruned with no dead limbs.
