River Clean Up 2013

At least a ton of garbage was picked up on the shores of the Mississippi River on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Five boats took about 30 volunteers to the shores and islands south of Hannibal. The volunteers removed about 15 tires, several barrels and tanks, along with a lot of plastic and glass bottles and other debris.

The cleanup was sponsored by Living Lands and Waters, an environmental organization that conducts river cleanups between St. Paul and St. Louis. The local sponsors were the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department and the 1819 Hannibal Stream Team -- a joint effort of the city and Hannibal's Board of Public Works. Snacks and drinks were supplied by General Mills, Frito-Lay and Pepsi.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to help!
